Title: Director of Strategic Programs and Special Initiatives

Paola Martinez directs strategic programs and special initiatives for Catholic Charities. In this role she helps the agency identify threats and opportunities, strengthen programs and services, and build new partnerships.

Prior to this job, Martinez was director of local government and legislative affairs for the SUNY system, advocating for the budget and legislative priorities for all 64 colleges and universities. Her work was instrumental in launching New York State’s Institute for Immigration Integration & Policy at the Rockefeller Institute of Government to help immigrants transition to community life and to further their educational and workforce development goals.

She previously served as director of social services and community engagement for Catholic Charities at the Betances Houses in the South Bronx, where she oversaw 41 buildings with approximately 3,000 residents. It was the largest New York City Housing Authority development to participate in the Rental Assistance Demonstration program. Martinez also has served as program manager and policy analyst for the New York City Department of Small Business Services, the New York City Commission on Human Rights, and the New York City Council.

She earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from the City College of New York and a master’s degree in urban policy and leadership from the Hunter College Graduate School of Planning and Policy. She is fluent in Spanish and French. Martinez is originally from the Dominican Republic and lives in New York City, where loves to explore new museums and try new food.
