Title: Meteorologist

Violeta Yas is a multiple Emmy Award-winning meteorologist for NBC 4 New York’s weather team.

Before moving back home to New York in March 2022, Yas worked at Telemundo62 and NBC10 Philadelphia, serving as chief meteorologist for nearly nine years. She launched Telemundo’s first local newscast in the city and was the only Spanish-speaking meteorologist during some of Philadelphia’s severe and historic weather.

Yas has appeared on Fox News, Fox Business, ABC World News Now, The Big Ten Network, Fox Sports, several Telemundo and Univision affiliates, and various other Spanish networks across Latin America.

Yas is rooted in her community and is passionate about bilingualism, mentorship, and STEM advocacy. In 2019, she partnered with a fellow meteorologist to translate a children’s book, “The Meteorologist in Me” (”La Meteoróloga en Mí”). She regularly visits classrooms to read bilingual book and promote STEM to young children.

Yas extends her passion for advocacy by serving as a lead broadcast ambassador for the American Meteorological Society’s Committee for Hispanic and Latinx Advancement. In this role, she leads a team of broadcast meteorologists nationwide in identifying, planning, and generating weather resources for the Spanish-speaking community.

Yas was born in Mar del Plata, Argentina, and raised in Bergen County. She received a bachelor’s degree in journalism and media studies with a minor in Spanish from Rutgers University-New Brunswick. She later earned a certificate of broadcast meteorology from Mississippi State University.
