Carlos Covarrubias is an associate at Hyde Park Venture Partners, a Chicago-based financial company that provides early-stage funding for companies in the middle of North America. Covarrubias is primarily responsible for finding new investment opportunities and for analyzing or evaluating companies.
He was raised in Oglesby, a community about 100 miles southwest of Chicago. His family is from a small ranch in Mexico outside of Zacatecas, so he grew up in a traditional Mexican household. At the local high school he was able to take a few business courses, something he was interested in studying at a university. He was attracted to the University of Notre Dame because it has one of the best business schools. Through Questbridge, a program for high-achieving students of low socioeconomic status, he was able to earn enough scholarships to pay for his college education.
At Notre Dame, Covarrubias majored in finance with a supplementary major in economics. Through Notre Dame he was also taught the power of networking, which allowed him to land a job at Mesirow Financial after graduation.
While at Mesirow, he started working alongside many influential Latinos in Chicago to build out Angeles Investors, an investing group dedicated to funding Hispanic and Latinx businesses, which often face a lack of venture capital investment. Covarrubias was able to join the team early enough to create the first pitch deck, onboard the first members, and help execute the first investment. Angeles allowed him to earn experience in early stage investing and also gain exposure to other Hispanic and Latinx angel investors. Through that experience, he was able to land his present position at Hyde Park Venture Partners.
He is also actively involved with the Chicago chapter of the Association of Latino Professionals for America.
