Title: Vice President of Construction Management

Michaelangelo Hernandez, P.E., PMP, serves as the Vice President of Construction Management at WSP, where he spearheads the growth of the Illinois Construction Management business. As one of the youngest and few Latinos in leadership at WSP, Hernandez envisions creating a talent pipeline of engineers and construction projects that uplift communities, delivering world-class construction services that surpass client expectations.

Hernandez began his journey at WSP as an engineering intern while pursuing his Civil Engineering degree at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Through this role, he gained hands-on experience in design and project management on Chicago-based projects with local agency clients. After graduating, he accepted a position as a consultant construction engineer, contributing to award-winning projects like the Albany Park Stormwater Diversion Tunnel and the Wells-Wentworth Connector, leaving a lasting impact on Chicago’s infrastructure and community.

His success led him to join Amazon Fresh Grocery Stores’ national Worldwide Physical Retail team, where he oversaw multi-disciplinary partners in the preconstruction and construction phases, managing projects with narrow margins for error. Leveraging his WSP experience, Hernandez played a key role in creating a compliance plan for diverse certified subcontractors, influencing contractors within Amazon.

A CPS graduate from Pilsen, Hernandez is a servant leader who has volunteered at Chicago Public School elementary and high schools for over a decade. He understands the importance of early student engagement and creating a supportive environment to expose them to various opportunities throughout their journey.

Words of Wisdom: We cannot seek achievement for ourselves and forget about progress and prosperity for our community. Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs for others.” -Cesar Chavez
