PHILADELPHIA — June 8 – With the world’s most-watched soccer tournament about to flood living rooms across the country, Comcast’s Xfinity is making a bet that how fans watch will matter nearly as much as the matches themselves.
The company on Monday unveiled a bilingual, feature-packed viewing experience designed for the summer’s marquee soccer event, promising to make every match easier to find, follow and enjoy — in both English and Spanish — across its entertainment platforms.
At the center of the rollout is the World Soccer hub on Xfinity X1, an aggregated, bicultural destination that pulls live and on-demand coverage from FOX Sports, Telemundo Deportes and assorted streaming services into a single, seamless screen. Customers can summon it with a phrase as simple as “World Cup” or “Copa Mundial” spoken into the Xfinity Voice Remote.
“We’ve been on a deliberate journey to reimagine how fans experience sports in the home,” said Vito Forlenza, Vice President of Sports and Entertainment at Comcast, framing the launch as the latest step in a longer strategy rather than a one-off. He added that the package marries premium picture quality, low-latency streaming and interactive features “powered by our most intelligent and reliable WiFi.”
The headline technology is RealTime4K, which Xfinity says will carry all 104 matches from FOX Sports — plus a daily featured match from Telemundo Deportes — to the home just seconds behind the live action, with Dolby Vision color and Dolby Atmos sound. To keep that high-bandwidth stream from stuttering, the company is introducing smart-boost WiFi, a one-click prompt that optimizes the connection to a customer’s X1 box. Internet subscribers can extend the same boost to phones, tablets, laptops and game consoles through the Xfinity app.
The interactive layer is where Xfinity is reaching hardest. A build-your-own Multiview lets fans watch up to four live events at once. Fan View, a companion experience on the same screen, allows viewers to track favorite countries, scores, stats, standings and odds without looking away from the game — and serves as the gateway to Xfinity Clips, a short-form highlight feed styled after the social platforms fans already scroll. For those catching up after the fact, AI Highlights automatically tags goals, penalty kicks and standout saves on DVR recordings of FOX and Telemundo coverage.
Xfinity is also courting the cord-cutters among its base. The company is launching FOX One on the Xfinity Xumo Stream Box for internet customers, pairing it with Peacock’s Spanish-language coverage so that every match is available without a traditional TV package. Mobile fans, meanwhile, can stream through the Xfinity Stream app and lean on more than 23 million Xfinity WiFi hotspots for speeds up to 1 Gbps on the go.
Rounding out the slate is a run of storytelling: four new original MLS series — Cup Dreams, Breakaway, National Anthems, and Cup Reflections — that follow players and teams as they prepare for the tournament, delivered to Xfinity screens via Comcast Technology Solutions’ Sports360 platform.
Taken together, the announcement reads as Xfinity’s most ambitious sports viewing push yet — an attempt to own not just the broadcast, but the whole experience around it.
