Nilsa Ruiz, LCSW, is a leading advocate for mental health as the co-owner of Chicago Growth Mindset, a dynamic practice driven by Latina voices focused on fostering organizational and individual wellness. Born and raised in Humboldt Park, Nilsa’s resilience, shaped by her upbringing in a single-parent household, fuels her unwavering commitment to dismantling barriers and eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health care, especially within underserved communities. With nearly 15 years of combined leadership and clinical expertise, she has become a beacon of empowerment, championing opportunities for black and brown communities to thrive by strengthening both systemic and personal resilience.
As a distinguished Latina mental health expert, Nilsa navigates her practice with a racial equity lens, recognizing the transformative potential of intergenerational approaches. In 2019, she emerged as a key figure in Chicago community organizing, playing a pivotal role in bridging the voting divide for Latinos and boosting representation for black and brown local officials. Her efforts catalyzed increased civic engagement and political empowerment within these communities.
Nilsa’s professional career includes over 9 years as Director of Mental Health at a non-profit organization, where she led a clinical team with distinction. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she spearheaded efforts to provide essential school-based mental health services, ensuring resources reached vulnerable populations. Certified as a Racial Healer trainer, Nilsa uses her understanding of clients’ narratives to harness community and individual resilience.
She is also certified in Circle of Security, employing an attachment-based parenting education program to help parents better understand and strengthen their relationships with their children. Additionally, as a certified Crisis Response Trainer through the Crisis Prevention Institute, she equips herself to effectively address crises and support individuals in distress. Grounded in her philosophy of fostering connection and fortitude, she brings unparalleled dedication to her work, supporting professionals in high-stress environments and guiding individuals, families, and organizations toward resilience and flourishing. Beyond her professional endeavors, she finds fulfillment as a devoted wife to Carlos and mother to her sons, Nilos and Nitaino Ruiz.
