As Director of the Women’s Business Center, the Mexico City native took the opportunity to offer advice to small business owners.

After 20 years in the corporate sector, Minerva Calatayud decided to leverage her expertise to serve her community. Consequently, she joined the Women’s Business Development Center (WBDC) in Aurora, Illinois, where she currently serves as the Director of Business Programs and Services for Division I.
As she revealed to Negocios Now, the unique distinction she found at this center was a decisive factor: “The WBDC’s mission is to help entrepreneurs launch and grow their businesses. Furthermore, the experience, knowledge, and passion of the advisors working here are truly exceptional,” noted the professional, who holds a Master’s degree in International Business from Saint Louis University in Missouri.
Calatayud highlighted the WBDC’s various lines of work, including “business programs, digital education, finance, e-commerce, and workshops designed to prepare businesses to become suppliers for government agencies or major corporations.”
In her view, these offerings “are excellent, and we are constantly updating them. We also,” she added, “certify businesses and assist them in securing capital”—a vital service, given that every entrepreneurial venture requires funding to move forward.
Drawing on her parallel role as Director of the Women’s Business Center—and leveraging her experience as an executive at both institutions, as well as her background as an entrepreneur who once ran her own consulting firm—the Mexico City native took the opportunity to offer advice to female entrepreneurs and business owners in general.
Business owners must “focus on their growth objectives, plan ahead, and remain flexible to adapt to the changes and challenges that arise. Likewise, they must maintain their motivation, seek assistance when needed, and surround themselves with a supportive team. The WBDC, for instance, is here to provide that support,” she concluded.
