Coding to transform Latinx

Age: 31

Title: Data Engineer

Name of Organization: GitHub

Lorena Mesa is a political scientist turned coder.  She is a Data Engineer on GitHub’s software intelligence systems team, Director on the Python Software Foundation, and co-organizer for PyLadies Chicago.

Lorena’s time at Obama for America and her subsequent graduate research required her to learn how to transform messy, incomplete data into intelligible analysis on topics like predicting Latinx voter behavior. It’s this unique background in research and applied mathematics that drove Lorena to pursue a career in engineering and data science.

In Lorena’s role as International Director at the Python Software Foundation, she supports and facilitates the growth of a diverse and international community of Python programmers and travels internationally to keynote at Python conferences.

Lorena was named to the Crain’s Chicago Business list of “20 in their 20’s” and “Crains Tech 50”.

Lorena holds a Bachelors from Northwestern University and a Masters from University of Illinois-Chicago.

Words of Wisdom:

“If my journey has taught me anything it is to try challenge your ideas, your worldview. Explore. Fail! Failure is the next step your best, most unexpected and exciting adventure.”
