Born in Monteria, Colombia, Maria knew from the time she was 5 years old that she wanted to be a doctor. Her dad, who is a minimally invasive gynecologist surgeon, was always her inspiration and her  example in the path of accomplishing this dream. While she was preparing to be a physician, she confirmed that helping women and saving lives was her passion. 

 After she finished medical school, she had the incredible opportunity to start working at Dr. John A. Martignetti’s translational laboratory in the Department of Genetics and Genomic Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. Their work focuses on genomics-based studies of gynecological malignancies.She is directly involved in the design and development of clinical studies that focus on improving women’s lives through the development, validation and implementation of novel diagnostic and screening tests for gynecologic cancers and gynecologic diseases.
