Immediately after graduating from college, Lucy Torres began working in human resources and recruitment, as she had always enjoyed the hiring process. As she revealed to Negocios Now, this is how she discovered that Express Employment Professionals shared her core values—a realization that led her to open her own franchise location in Illinois (IL) in 2012.

“The reason that led me down this path was that I started working for someone else and realized I wanted to own my own company. At that time, my challenges involved building a business from scratch, growing our client base, and retraining entrepreneurs—because, sometimes, you have to go through a few people to find the right ones,” she explained.

Torres emphasized that her company maintains “a strong focus on customer service. We always strive to provide the best service for both our associates and our clientele, and as the owner, I try to be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We believe so strongly in service that our phone system isn’t set up for voicemail, but rather to connect callers directly to our live team.”

Born and raised in the Midwest and of Mexican descent, the executive acknowledged that she loves what she does because it allows her to “help people find work. The difference,” she noted, “is that we offer a wide variety of positions across different categories—such as light industrial, office administration, and now, healthcare. Furthermore, we aren’t an out-of-state branch; we are a locally owned and operated franchise right here in IL,” she specified.

When asked what advice she would offer to small business owners, the executive responded emphatically: “Open a business you are passionate about, because everything will fall into place when you make a living doing what you love. Additionally, hire the right people and treat them well—for they are the ones who will manage your operations and help you achieve growth.”
