Jesus Castillo: “Optics Engineer Powering Next-Gen Devices”

Title: Camera Optical Engineer
Organization: Apple
Age: 32

Jesus Castillo is a first-generation college student raised in California’s Central Valley by immigrant parents from Mexico. Growing up in a low-income environment, he developed a fundamental drive for tackling complex challenges early on—whether studying physics or working in the agricultural fields of Northern California. This foundation of discipline led him to Silicon Valley at eighteen years old, where he immersed himself in the study of optics, electronics, and programming.

His early career was defined by a “foundations-first” approach, gaining diverse experience in customer service and manufacturing while mastering the technical rigors of optical sciences.

Today, Jesus operates at the intersection of technical precision and strategic execution. As an Engineering Program Manager at Apple specializing in Optics Metrology, he leads high-stakes initiatives that ensure the hardware of the future meets standards. This follows a successful tenure as a Camera Optical Engineer at Google, where he was instrumental in testing and validating the Pixel phone lineup and Augmented Reality tools. Across these roles, Jesus has navigated the complexities of cross-functional collaboration, bridging the gap between Product Design, Software, and Hardware to bring sophisticated consumer electronics to life.

Beyond his corporate career, Jesus is the VP of Strategy of Code Artists, a non-profit based in Santa Clara County. His mission is to scale educational pipelines that transform students into active creators of technology, leveraging his experience in strategy and decision-making to drive equitable access to tech education.

Jesus is passionate about understanding the “why” behind the “how”—developing product strategies that balance technical feasibility with market importance. When Jesus is not in the lab or the boardroom, he stays grounded through Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, weightlifting, hiking, and creative writing.
