Gustavo Torres, a Senior Engineer with ComEd’s Distribution Standards team, has emerged as a key figure in shaping the future of power distribution infrastructure. With a career marked by technical expertise, leadership, and a deep commitment to community, he has been at the forefront of numerous projects that have significantly impacted the power distribution grid.
Gustavo is responsible for developing and publishing overhead construction standards and addressing technical inquiries related to power distribution infrastructure. With extensive experience in the power distribution industry, he has worked on various projects, including 4kV-12kV conversions, Distribution Automation, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Recloser Programs, capacity planning for critical projects, and new business electrical installations.
He has also been involved in Fiber Optic Supply Cable (FOSC) design, training of engineers and Quality Assurance. In recognition of his contributions, Gustavo was honored with the prestigious ComEd Early Career Award in 2022. This award recognizes engineers who have made significant contributions to their work group and company and who demonstrate the potential for future leadership in technical roles at ComEd.
Beyond his technical achievements, Gustavo is deeply passionate about mentorship and education. He recently had the opportunity to teach Electricity 101 to students at ComEd’s Construct Youth Academy and Power Up Academy, both of which are designed to develop a diverse technical talent pipeline to support Illinois’s clean energy transition. Most recently, he was invited to serve as a panelist at the launch of the “Ignite Your Future” program, a partnership between Chicago Public Schools, ComEd, and City Colleges of Chicago, aimed at expanding career-readiness opportunities for students. His involvement in these programs speaks to his commitment to inspiring the next generation of engineers, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.
Gustavo is an active member of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE), where he serves on the board of the Exelon chapter as Vice President of Public Relations. He is also a member of the Organization of Latinos at Exelon (OLE) and has served in leadership roles within the Hispanic American Construction Industry Association (HACIA). Gustavo represented ComEd/Exelon in the McKinsey & Company Hispanic & Latino Leadership Essentials Program. Gustavo grew up in the Southeast side of Chicago, holds an Electrical Engineering degree from Illinois Institute of Technology, and is a proud family man, married for 10 years with three children. He also served as an associate pastor of a local church in the south eastside of Chicago for 9 years.
