When Chicago Chef Namhee Kim decided to take her grilling talents beyond backyard cookouts, she tapped into a network of support that helped her turn a passion into a thriving business. Her journey reflects how credit unions provide entrepreneurs across Illinois with resources to start, strengthen, and expand their businesses.
The Illinois Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (IHCC), in partnership with the Illinois Credit Union League (ICUL) and participating credit unions, connects small business owners to no-cost technical assistance. Services include one-on-one coaching, business plan development, incorporation and licensing support, financial analysis, help accessing capital, among other services in both English and Spanish.
“Opening Daebak Korean BBQ was a dream come true, and Northwest Community Credit Union made it possible every step of the way,” said Kim. “From securing financing for construction to helping me navigate the opening process and supporting our growth, they were more than just a lender—they were a true partner. Thanks to their guidance and belief in my vision, Daebak is now a thriving part of the community.”
For entrepreneurs like Kim, resources from IHCC can make the difference between a dream and a sustainable business. By pairing technical assistance with the financial expertise of credit unions, the program ensures that small business owners don’t have to navigate challenges alone.
“Supporting small businesses is central to our mission because their success strengthens entire communities,” said Libby Calderone, ICUL President and CEO. “Through our partnership with IHCC, Illinois credit unions are extending financial inclusion and helping entrepreneurs gain the knowledge and tools they need to thrive.”
The impact of this initiative is visible across industries. Whether it’s a food entrepreneur scaling up operations, a local retailer opening new doors, or a start-up laying its foundation, IHCC creates pathways for growth, ensuring accessibility for Illinois’ diverse communities of entrepreneurs.
Business owners will have a chance to learn directly from credit union leaders at the 2025 IHCC Business Conference & Expo on October 9 at Navy Pier in downtown Chicago. Guests are encouraged to visit the Illinois Credit Union League booth on the exhibit from 11 am to 4 pm.  The exhibition and workshops at the EXPO are free to the public. This event brings together entrepreneurs, financial experts, and community leaders for a day of networking, learning, and connections.
The story of Chef Namhee underscores what’s possible when passion meets support. With access to IHCC and the partnership of local credit unions, entrepreneurs across Illinois are building businesses that not only achieve their own goals but also contribute to stronger, more resilient communities.
