As a bilingual recruiter at Governor’s State University, Emmanuel Lopez knows the value of higher education.

He has experience working in areas of recruitment, admissions, leadership programs, first-year experience, scholarships, and student life.

A first-generation, Latinx trailblazer, he earned an associate’s degree from Prairie State College, a bachelor’s degree in communication and public relations at Indiana University Northwest where he had a dual minor in psychology and Spanish.

After earning his bachelor’s degree he earned his master’s degree in higher education leadership and educational leadership and administration from Northeastern Illinois University.

At Northeastern he was part of the ENLACE program whose mission is to invest in the preparation of leadership in higher education that will create change responsive to the educational needs of an increasingly diverse student population in colleges and universities.

The program aims to support promising students to work as culturally competent and critical staff and administrators at institutions of higher education immediately after they graduate.

As the bilingual recruiting specialist at Governor’s State, he performs a variety of complex professional and administrative tasks related to introducing and recruiting high school students. He works with the associate director of recruitment to oversee the creation and deployment of key communication for the recruitment and retention of undergraduate students.

As part of his role, he serves to build relationships with both high school and community college staff; managing an assigned recruitment territory and providing superior customer service at all times.

In addition to his work at Governor’s State, he serves as the vice-chair for HACE’s Chicago Aux Board. His work with HACE feeds his passion for mentorship and provides opportunities to network, attend coaching sessions and gain board experience.

His work with HACE has helped make him a more confident and versatile professional. He appreciates how consistent and intentional HACE is about lifting up the next generation of leaders through their conferences, scholarships, and career development.
