Brenda Gonzalez: “Transforming In-Stadium Fan Engagement”

Title: Puente Counselor and Co-Coordinator
Organization: Diablo Valley Community College
Age: 36

Brenda Gonzalez is a first-generation professional, proud daughter of immigrants from Jalisco, Mexico, and a former community college student who now returns to that same space as a counselor and educator—transforming the very system that once changed her life.

Her journey through higher education became the foundation for a life dedicated to uplifting others. As a Mexican American, first-generation, bilingual community college student, Brenda began her academic journey feeling underprepared and unsure of how to navigate higher education. She often felt out of place and questioned her ability to succeed. That changed when she found community through the Puente Project at Diablo Valley College.

Surrounded by instructors, counselors, and mentors who saw her potential and encouraged her to believe in herself, she found both direction and purpose. That experience ignited her passion for psychology and counseling and set her on a path she has remained committed to ever since. She went on to earn her Associate of Arts in Psychology for Transfer from Diablo Valley College, her Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Education from UC Berkeley, and her Master’s in Counseling from San Francisco State University. As a former transfer student, she understands firsthand the transformative impact a community college education can have on students and their families.

Today, she serves as a full-time Puente Counselor and Instructor at Diablo Valley College, where she is committed to returning to her community and walking alongside first-generation college students at every stage of their educational journeys. She knows the courage it takes to be the first and is dedicated to ensuring her students feel seen, supported, and empowered to achieve the goals they set for themselves.
