At just 14 years old, Amalia Hernández left her native Ecuador to begin a new chapter in the U.S. Arriving without speaking English, she embraced the challenge with determination, committed not only to learning the language, but also to understanding and integrating into a new culture. Today, her journey stands as a testament to perseverance and the power of turning obstacles into opportunities.

Hernández’s professional path has been anything but conventional. At 18, she began working alongside her father in a steel manufacturing company in Brooklyn, an experience that would lay the foundation for her career in design and construction. “That was the beginning of my journey in this industry,” she reflects. “Today, I bring nearly two decades of experience to my work.” This hands-on introduction proved to be an invaluable education, shaping her practical expertise and industry insight.

Since 2020, Hernández has been a key member of Azar Design Co, a multidisciplinary firm offering a comprehensive suite of design services. As Senior Business Development & Client Relations Manager, she has played an instrumental role in the firm’s continued growth, advancing from a marketing-focused position to leading high-level business strategies.

Currently, she spearheads business development efforts in New York, where her leadership has driven significant expansion. Under her direction, the firm has evolved from an office in Queens to preparing for a strategic move to Manhattan, marking a major milestone in its growth trajectory.

Her influence extends beyond New York. Hernández has been pivotal in the firm’s geographic expansion, contributing to the establishment of offices in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and most recently, Miami. “Each new location reflects a deliberate strategy to strengthen our presence in key markets,” she notes.

In her role, Hernández oversees client relations, market analysis, and proposal development, serving as a primary liaison for key accounts while collaborating on large-scale initiatives. Her ability to align business development with client needs has been central to the firm’s success.

Looking ahead to 2026, the focus is on building upon this momentum. “Our goal is to continue securing large-scale projects that support sustainable, long-term growth,” she explains. High-profile initiatives, including projects at JFK Airport, new casino developments in New York, and municipal infrastructure programs, are part of this forward-looking strategy.

Like many in the industry, Hernández and her team have faced challenges. She points to recent changes to the federal Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) certification by the U.S. Department of Transportation as a pivotal moment. “We had to adapt quickly,” she says.

“Those changes pushed us to rethink our approach and find new ways to leverage our strengths.” That adaptability has proven to be a defining advantage. By relying on a strong track record and a robust portfolio, the firm has successfully expanded its access to both federal and state projects. “Our experience and the quality of our work have been our greatest assets,” Hernández emphasizes.

Innovation also plays a critical role in the firm’s operations. By integrating advanced technologies, such as AI-powered systems and 3D scanning, Azar Design Co continues to enhance efficiency and precision across its services. With nearly 200 employees and six offices nationwide, the firm delivers expertise across architecture, landscape architecture, building systems engineering, civil engineering, surveying, construction management, and environmental services.

Beyond her professional achievements, Hernández remains deeply committed to giving back. For more than a decade, she has supported MIRA USA, an organization dedicated to helping immigrants navigate life in the United States. “Their work is essential,” she says. “They provide guidance on everything from language to legal systems, helping individuals successfully adapt to a new environment.”
