SUSANA A. MENDOZA, Comptroller of Illinois

Entity: State of Illinois

Susana Mendoza was the first woman ever elected to the office of Chicago City Clerk, and in 2016, she became the first Hispanic to ever run for and win a statewide office as a Democrat. She got her political start at 28 as a state representative, when, in 2000, she joined the General Assembly as its youngest member and later co-founded the first Illinois Legislative Latino Caucus. After six terms she became City Clerk, where, among other things, she created a year-round sales program for city vehicle stickers that brought in more money for the city, cost less and better served 1.3 million customers.
