Carlos Tortolero is founder and president of the National Museum of Mexican Art, the nation’s largest Latino arts organization and the only Latino museum accredited by the American Association of Museums. Tortolero spent 12 years as a teacher, counselor and administrator in Chicago Public School and taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, University of Illinois at Chicago and Northwestern University. In 2009, he was appointed trustee of the University of Illinois. He is the co-author of Mexican Chicago, a photo history book of the Mexican community, and he has written articles for national and international publications and won numerous awards.
